I first heard this song by The Boswell Sisters, who are among my greatest musical heroes. I have since dug into the many recordings of this song made by its composer, Clarence Williams, at least some of which the Boswells were clearly familiar with when they concocted their arrangement. My arrangement draws influence from all the aforementioned recordings... and the jazz lineage continues!
I must say that I sure enjoyed having a male chorus at my beck and call -
thanks fellas!
lyrics
If you want your soul set free
Lift your voice and sing with me
Shout, sister, shout, sister, shout!
If the Devil grabs your hand
Here's one thing that he can't stand
Shout, sister, shout, sister, shout!
Walkin' down to the river
Singing a hallelu song
Up jumps the Devil before me
But I'll keep plodding along, oh
Tell old Satan how you feel
Get that Devil off your heel
Shout, sister, shout, sister, shout!
Mmm if you want your soul set free
Lift your voice and sing with me
Shout, sister, shout, sister, shout!
If that Devil grabs your hand
Here's one thing that he can't stand
Shout, sister, shout, sister, shout!
Now, walkin' down to the river ("woo hoo!")
Singing a hallelu song ("ah-ha!")
Up jumps the Devil before me ("how ya doin'?")
But I'll keep plodding along, oh
Tell old Satan how you feel
Go on and get that filthy Devil right off your heel!
Shout, sister, shout, sister, shout!

Featured prominently on my most recent album is the irrepressibly spirited clarinet/sax playing of Joe Abbott. He also writes charming acoustic country songs, which will make you both laugh and cry! Jen Hodge All Stars
To my ears, this is the finest album I have played on to date. Greg is spectacular, and the musical chemistry between Jon Doyle and Evan Price is electrifying... in a totally acoustic kind of way! Jen Hodge All Stars
I am a ginormous fan of Albanie Falletta's, and you should be too. She's a masterful interpreter of jazz, blues, and ragtime, AND her wise-beyond-her-years songwriting slays me. Check her out!! Jen Hodge All Stars
